PONDA: Following the withdrawal of the monsoon, witnessing the world-famous Dudhsagar Waterfall at Collem in its full glory is a treat for waterfall and nature-loving tourists. However, a change in weather and retreating rains have delayed the start of the tourist season, keeping visitors away from this majestic site. The tourist season, which usually begins officially on October 2, has been delayed by at least two weeks due to the continuing heavy rains.

It has now been learned that the season at the majestic waterfall is expected to commence on Saturday, October 19. However, in the event of further heavy rain, the opening may be postponed again, as the river often floods, making it difficult for jeeps carrying tourists to cross the river twice before reaching the waterfall deep within the forest.

During the monsoon season, which is considered the off-season, the 14 km jungle route to the waterfall becomes muddy and rocky, requiring repairs before it can be made motorable. These road repairs are reportedly near completion. Around 435 local jeep operators, who earn their livelihood by transporting tourists to the Dudhsagar Waterfall along this rough jungle road, are eagerly awaiting the start of the season. The Forest Department and local panchayat also generate revenue, amounting to several crores, from tourism in the area.

The delay in the tourist season has caused some disappointment among the jeep operators as well as tourists who are eagerly anticipating the chance to see the waterfall in its full splendour. The journey to the waterfall is an adventurous one, with jeeps crossing the river twice before reaching the falls, which are located deep within a lush green forest far from any local habitation. The waterfall cascades down from a tall hill at a height of approximately 300 metres.

The tourist season continues until the end of May, with the period from June to September considered off-season. Despite the delayed season start, visitors travelling to Goa via the South Western Railway can still enjoy the view of Dudhsagar Waterfall from the railway bridge as they pass by.
