PANJIM: Following complaints from the residents of heritage wards of Sao Tome and Fontainhas regarding unruly behaviour and indiscipline by tourists, Panjim MLA and Revenue Minister Atanasio alias Babush Monserrate finally on Saturday paid a visit to heritage precincts, seeking suggestions and solutions to the vexed issue.

The Minister sought suggestions from the residents to maintain peace in the heritage precincts.

It is pertinent to note that the residents have been complaining about unruly behaviour exhibited by the tourists in Sao Tome and Fontainhas areas. The problem arose after resident Aloo Gomes Pereira objected to the behaviour of unruly tourists which led to an altercation.

Monserrate said that the tourists who visit the heritage precincts have no class. “They neither know the culture nor the architecture of the heritage precincts. The residents have no issues on promoting tourism, but insist on quality tourists who will behave in a responsible manner,” he said.

Babush sought a list of suggestions from the residents to prevent tourists from behaving in a unruly manner. These suggestion would be part of rules and regulations manual that the tourists that will have to follow while entering the heritage precincts.

“Tourists are always welcome as long as behave modestly,” he said.

Aloo said, “If this continues in heritage precincts, our wives and daughters won’t be safe. We had to get the MLA involved and have suggested what needs to be done. We don’t need such tourism in Goa and I hope the problems will be resolved.”

Babush said that there are rules, but there has to be someone to enforce them.

“A meeting will be held with officials and solutions will be worked out in coordination following an inspection,” he added.
