The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Goa from May 20 to 22, forecasting very heavy rainfall, lightning, and gusty winds over the coastal state. The weather is expected to remain turbulent through May 23 and 24, for which a yellow alert has also been issued.
The IMD has cautioned against hazardous sea conditions during this period and strongly advised fishermen not to venture into the sea. High wind speeds and rough seas are expected to pose serious safety risks along Goa’s coastline.
This weather pattern aligns with the seasonal advance of the southwest monsoon, typically heralded by its onset over Kerala, which usually occurs around June 1. The IMD’s alert indicates that pre-monsoon activity is intensifying over Goa, serving as a precursor to the official arrival of the monsoon season.
Authorities are urging residents and tourists in Goa to stay informed, avoid unnecessary travel during the alert period, and follow all safety advisories issued by the meteorological and disaster management departments.
