In Google maps We Trust? GPS Leads Car Into Church Compound, Down the Steps in Canacona

A Telangana-registered car landed in an unusual spot on Saturday evening after the driver, relying solely on Google Maps, mistakenly drove onto the steps of St Theresa of Jesus Church in Chaudi-Canacona. The church, situated beside the NH66 highway, has a proper access road from the right, but the driver followed GPS directions that led him directly over five entrance steps.

Witnesses said the vehicle was first seen near the old bus stand in Chaudi before the driver took a narrow road behind the municipal garden, which runs parallel to NH66. Misguided by his navigation app, he entered the church compound and tried to descend the steps, believing it to be a shortcut to the highway. The attempt left the car stuck midway down the steps.

Locals quickly gathered to assist, pushing the vehicle back into the church compound and guiding the driver to the correct route. With their help, he was soon back on track and continued his journey towards Margao.

The incident serves as a reminder of the potential pitfalls of over-reliance on GPS, especially in unfamiliar areas where local knowledge and attention to surroundings remain crucial for safe navigation.
