Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) achieved a major milestone with the keel laying of Yard 1283, the fourth vessel in the Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) series for the Indian Navy. The ceremony, held on June 9, 2025, was graced by Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Vice Chief of the Naval Staff. He lauded the Ministry of Defence, the Indian Navy, and the nation’s shipbuilding sector for their steadfast commitment to defence self-reliance.

This development marks continued progress in the ₹6,200 crore NGOPV project, which involves the construction of seven state-of-the-art patrol vessels, all designed and built indigenously by GSL. Each ship will measure 114 meters in length, 14.6 meters in width, and will have a displacement of 2,700 tonnes. They will be powered by dual diesel engines with Controllable Pitch Propellers and outfitted with advanced indigenous weapons and sensor systems, tailored to meet the operational demands of the Indian Navy.

Vice Admiral Swaminathan praised GSL for its adherence to quality and its ability to deliver vital defence assets on tight schedules. GSL Chairman and Managing Director Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay reaffirmed the shipyard’s dedication to indigenisation, innovation, and excellence. He emphasized that GSL's growing reputation in naval shipbuilding is a result of consistently delivering high-quality projects with significant indigenous content. The NGOPV series, he noted, reflects the Navy’s confidence in GSL and underscores the shipyard’s strategic role in advancing India's maritime capabilities.

Once commissioned, the NGOPVs will bolster the Indian Navy’s coastal defence, surveillance, search and rescue operations, and protection of offshore assets. These vessels will also play a crucial role in furthering India’s objectives of defence self-sufficiency and economic development.
