MAPUSA: Angry villagers from Anjuna and Vagator gheraoed the PWD (water supply) engineers at their office near St Xavier’s College, Mapusa, in protest against irregular water supply.

The villagers refused to leave the premises until the engineers of PWD, works division XVII gave in writing that they would provide one water tanker per household per week.

They alleged that in the past PWD had told them to provide only one tanker for the area per week, which they claimed was not adequate.

Anjuna-Caisua sarpanch Laxmidas Chimulkar and some panchayat members joined the villagers, mostly women, who carried empty vessels.

The villagers complained that for the last four months the water supply was erratic and alleged that the PWD engineers were giving empty promises.

According to them, the PWD water supply pipeline has been damaged while laying the cables by the Electricity Department, and till date, it has not been repaired. A panchayat member complained that he had removed plastic, other waste material and even a dead rat from the broken pipeline and demanded that the pipeline be cleaned and flushed to remove any residual contamination.

Later, the PWD assistant engineer and junior engineer gave in writing that once in a week, one water tanker will be supplied to existing consumers on receipt of complaint in village panchayat Anjuna-Caisua till water supply is regularised.
