The task force constituted to assess and recommend improvements for the Kala Academy’s infrastructure has submitted its final report to Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant. A meeting with the Public Works Department (PWD) and other relevant authorities to review the findings is scheduled for Friday, May 9, 2025.

Speaking at Mantralaya in Porvorim on Thursday, CM Sawant confirmed the submission. “The Task Force on Kala Academy has submitted its report today. I will hold a meeting on this tomorrow. I haven’t gone through the report yet,” he told reporters.

The task force, chaired by renowned theatre artist Vijai Kenkre, was formed in response to mounting concerns from Goa’s arts community, who criticised the ongoing renovation work at the state’s premier cultural complex as haphazard and unstructured, despite substantial expenditure.

Kenkre, speaking after submitting the report, revealed that the task force identified 18 to 20 specific faults in the renovation. “We’ve handed over detailed observations to the Chief Minister, who assured us that rectification work will begin following discussions with the PWD. The task force will continue to oversee the corrections,” Kenkre stated.

He also added that a new tender process will be initiated for the rectification work and that Kala Academy may be temporarily closed while the issues are addressed.

The task force—formed in October 2024—includes representatives from the PWD, Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG), Kala Academy, Kala Rakhonn Mand, and initially, the Charles Correa Foundation, which later opted out. Prior to submitting the report, the task force conducted a detailed inspection of the Kala Academy premises.

The report aims to realign renovation efforts with the functional and aesthetic needs of the arts community while restoring public trust in the project. The upcoming meeting is expected to chart a roadmap for the implementation of the recommendations.
