Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar on Monday described the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 as India’s first serious attempt to decolonize its education system, asserting that it will help keep future generations connected to their cultural roots.
Speaking at the 41st Foundation Day celebrations of Goa University, Arlekar emphasized that education must be anchored in local context and values.
“Our education system keeps us rooted to our soil. NEP 2020 is the first serious attempt to decolonize our education,” he said.
The Governor stressed the importance of research as a core function of any higher education institution. “Where there is no research, it cannot be called a university,” he remarked.
He urged the university leadership to engage closely with students and the public to shape its academic priorities. “Get to the students, get to the public to decide what is best needed for the university,” he added.
Calling for a clear long-term vision, Arlekar said Goa University should prepare a Master Plan to guide its growth and future development.
The event was attended by faculty, students, and dignitaries who shared reflections on the university’s four decades of contribution to higher education in Goa.
