Porvorim MLA and Cabinet Minister Rohan Khaunte on Sunday strongly opposed the Centre’s approval for a private jetty at Malim, stating that neither he, the local panchayat, nor the residents were taken into consideration before the No Objection Certificate (NOC) was granted.

Expressing shock over learning about the ₹8-crore project through the media, Khaunte questioned, “How can applications for central approval be allowed without involving the local MLA, panchayat, or community? This shows a lack of transparency and groundwork.”

He emphasized the need to evaluate local sentiments, the impact on the fisherfolk community, and other environmental and social aspects before granting such permissions. “The decision must include consultation with the people, panchayat body, and local MLA—none of which has happened,” Khaunte stated.

Assuring his full support to the people of Malim, he said, “They cannot come with the Centre’s nod without us knowing. I will take this matter to the Chief Minister to ensure transparency. If I, as a cabinet minister, only come to know of such developments through newspapers, then someone is clearly working behind the curtains.”

Penha de Franca Sarpanch Swapnil Chodankar, along with panchayat members and residents, has also come out in strong opposition to the project, asserting that no permission has been granted by the panchayat for any private jetty at Malim.
