In a first-of-its-kind offering for private vehicle owners, the Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) has announced the launch of Roll-on Roll-off (Ro-Ro) car transportation services between Kolad in Maharashtra and Verna in Goa, beginning August 23, 2025. The service marks an expansion of KRCL’s innovative freight solution, which has been in operation since 1999, previously used to transport trucks through the challenging Western Ghats terrain.
This newly introduced service provides private car owners a safer, more economical, and environmentally friendly alternative to long-distance road travel. The Ro-Ro car rake can accommodate 40 cars per trip and will operate on alternate days in each direction until September 11, 2025. Departures from both Kolad and Verna are scheduled at 5:00 PM, arriving at 5:00 AM the next day. Passengers must report at the departure station by 2:00 PM.
The freight charge for transporting a car is ₹7,875 (inclusive of GST), with an initial booking fee of ₹4,000. The remaining balance must be paid on the day of travel. Up to three passengers per car can travel in an attached passenger coach — either 3AC (₹935 per passenger) or Second Seating (₹190 per passenger).
Bookings open on July 21 and will close on August 13, 2025. Reservations can be made at KRCL’s Belapur office in Navi Mumbai or at the Verna Railway Station in Goa. Payments can be made via UPI or in cash. If fewer than 16 cars are booked for a trip, the journey will be cancelled and full refunds will be issued.
KRCL’s latest initiative is expected to not only ease road traffic along the Mumbai-Goa highway corridor but also offer a convenient and eco-conscious travel solution to tourists and residents alike.
