Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC) driver Rajesh Pagi has been placed under suspension following public outrage over an incident in which school students were allegedly made to push a broken-down KTC bus on the Nuvem–Manora route.
The suspension, confirmed by KTC officials, is pending the outcome of an internal inquiry.
The incident came to light afterO Heraldohighlighted the matter, and a video of the students pushing the stranded bus on a busy road stretch later went viral on social media. The footage sparked widespread criticism, with many questioning the driver’s judgement and the safety protocols observed by the transport authority.
“A memorandum was issued to the driver, and now he is under suspension until the inquiry is completed. Further action will depend on the outcome of the inquiry,” said Sanket Manjrekar, in-charge of the KTC Margao depot, while speaking toO Heraldo.
According to preliminary information, the bus reportedly suffered a mechanical failure during a routine trip. Rather than waiting for authorised roadside assistance or arranging a relief vehicle, Pagi allegedly instructed the school students on board to push the heavy bus in an attempt to either restart it or shift it off the road.
The incident has drawn strong criticism from parents and commuters alike, many of whom labelled the act as reckless and dangerous. “No child should be made to push a bus in the middle of the road,” said one concerned parent. “This shows a lack of planning and concern for passenger welfare.”
KTC’s swift action to suspend the driver and initiate an inquiry has been welcomed by local residents and civil society groups. Citizens have urged the corporation to strictly enforce guidelines concerning vehicle breakdowns and passenger safety. “There must be zero tolerance for such lapses,” said a Margao-based commuter rights advocate.
Meanwhile, KTC has reassured the public that passenger safety remains a top priority and that strict disciplinary measures will be taken if the inquiry confirms negligence or violation of safety norms by the driver.
