MARGAO: Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao, expressed concern over the lack of support from the Art and Culture Department for the youth of Goa, despite their clear interest in preserving and promoting the state's rich cultural traditions.

Speaking at the Ghumat Aarti Competition in Velipwada-Balli, organised by Shree Ganesh Mandir for the occasion of Laxmi Pujan, Alemao praised the energy and talent of the youth who participated in the event, especially in playing percussions and singing aartis.

He noted that this demonstrated the future of Goa’s cultural heritage is in good hands. However, he lamented that the Art and Culture Department has not been proactive in providing the necessary support, such as musical instruments, to these young artists.

Alemao called on the government to streamline the process for acquiring musical instruments and other resources, so that youth groups and artists could benefit from government schemes designed to support their work.

"If the government truly wants to preserve Goan culture and tradition, it should ensure that such schemes reach the genuine artists and groups who need them, rather than facing bureaucratic hurdles," said Yuri.

The Leader of Opposition pointed to the many Goan artists who have earned national recognition and pride for the state, asserting that it is the government’s responsibility to support them in return for the honor they bring to Goa.

He urged the government to ensure that these artists receive the necessary resources and encouragement.

Quepem MLA Alton D'Costa, who was also present at the event, congratulated the participants and emphasized that competitions should be seen not just as a platform for winning but as a learning experience that builds confidence and helps shape future performances.

He urged those who did not win not to be discouraged but to use the experience to improve.

D'Costa also took the opportunity to address the youth more broadly, advising them to resist the temptation of divisive politics and instead focus on preserving Goa’s unity and brotherhood.
