A tragic accident at the Salaulim canal in Cotarli has sparked widespread public outcry, with local residents demanding the immediate construction of permanent iron railings on both sides of the canal to prevent further loss of life.
The incident, which occurred a few days ago, claimed the life of Prakash Gaonkar, a local resident who tragically fell into the canal. The tragedy has left the community in shock and has highlighted longstanding safety concerns about the canal's unprotected edges, frequently used by both pedestrians and vehicles.
In response, the Water Resources Department (WRD) erected a bamboo railing as a temporary safety measure—but only on one side of the canal. Ironically, this was the same side where the fatal fall occurred. The other side of the canal remains completely exposed, raising questions about the effectiveness and urgency of the department’s actions.
Locals have slammed the half-measure as insufficient and dangerous. Many say the bamboo fencing is unstable and unsuitable for a route that sees daily use by two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and even ambulances during emergencies. "It is the need of the hour that a steel railing be put along the side of the canal to ensure the safety of the people around," said Nita Naik, a concerned resident. "With children and cattle nearby, this open canal is a serious threat to life."
Sushila Gaonkar, another local resident, added, "The government has only made a temporary fence on one side of the canal. We urgently need a permanent iron railing on both sides before another tragedy occurs."
The community continues to press authorities to take immediate, meaningful action to secure the canal, calling for permanent, durable safety infrastructure that can protect lives and prevent similar incidents in the future.
