Leader of Opposition (LoP) Yuri Alemao has raised serious concern in the Goa Legislative Assembly over the abrupt retrenchment of 84 mining workers at Surla-Sonshi. The issue came to light after the company informed the workers’ union about the decision during a meeting held on July 26, 2025.
Alemao criticized the sudden move, stating that such actions have a direct impact on the livelihoods of affected families. “The workers were given no prior warning or time to prepare. This is unjust and unacceptable,” he said while urging the government to intervene.
He demanded immediate steps to safeguard the rights of the retrenched employees and to ensure that companies operating in Goa follow proper labour procedures before taking such drastic steps.
The retrenchment has sparked unrest among the workers’ union and local communities, with many calling for the reinstatement of jobs or adequate compensation. The matter is expected to be taken up further for discussion in the ongoing Assembly session.
