A massive mango tree came crashing down on a newly constructed restaurant in Baga, near the Acron Waterfront, just days before its grand opening, causing extensive damage and leaving the owner reeling from the unexpected setback.

The restaurant, owned by Cleophas Fernandes, former Deputy Sarpanch of Arpora-Nagoa, was nearly ready for inauguration, with the launch scheduled within the next two to three days. The establishment was set to offer authentic Goan fish curry and rice, targeting both locals and tourists in the popular beachside area.

The fallen tree destroyed a significant portion of the structure, with initial estimates placing the damage at around ₹3.5 lakh. The restaurant was in its final stages of preparation, with interiors and kitchen installations almost complete at the time of the incident.

“This has been a devastating blow,” said Fernandes. “We had put our heart and soul into building this place. Everything was ready, and we were just days away from opening our doors.”

Local residents and authorities arrived at the scene shortly after the incident. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, as the restaurant was unoccupied at the time of the collapse. Cleanup and damage assessment are currently underway, and there is no word yet on when the new opening date will be set.

Fernandes, though disheartened, remains determined to rebuild. “It’s a setback, but I am hopeful we will bounce back soon,” he said.

The incident serves as a reminder of the risks posed by unmonitored old trees in urban and semi-urban areas, especially during pre-monsoon weather conditions when soil erosion and high winds can weaken their stability.
