MAPUSA: The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) on Friday demolished 35 illegal and unauthorised roadside structures at Karaswada, Mapusa.
According to MMC Chief officer Chandrakant Shetkar, there were several complaints from the PWD (roads division) and the traffic police against these roadside structures creating traffic congestion. He said that these structures had sprouted on the road widening land.
Following complaints, the Mapusa municipal technical staff inspected the site and found that 52 roadside unauthorised structures. Accordingly, notices were issued to its owners/occupants asking them to submit their documents if any.
Only two structures were found to be legal having all permissions from the municipal council, and demolition orders were issued to 50 illegal and unauthorised structures. But 14 occupants appealed against the demolition orders and the same are being heard. Also two occupants obtained a stay from the Administrative Tribunal while, one occupant demolished his roadside structure.
Shetkar said that these illegal unauthorised structures had sprouted again after a service road was built. He said that though 14 occupants have appealed against the demolition order and they will not be allowed to operate and their premise will be sealed by the municipality.
