In a bold move, the Mapusa Merchants Association (MMA) has announced that it will shut down the Mapusa Municipal Market on June 23 if the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) fails to address their concerns regarding the recently imposed sanitation fee.
The association expressed strong dissatisfaction over what they termed an unjustified levy, stating that repeated appeals to the council have gone unanswered. Members of the MMA argue that the sanitation services provided do not justify the charges being demanded from stall owners and traders.
“This is our final warning,” a spokesperson for the MMA said. “If the MMC does not respond to our demands, we will be forced to close the market in protest.”
The planned shutdown threatens to disrupt business in one of North Goa’s busiest marketplaces, especially with the monsoon season already impacting trade. Traders are urging the municipal authorities to hold an urgent dialogue and review the fee structure before the deadline.
The MMC has not yet issued an official response.
