The Mapusa Municipal Council has announced the implementation of a dog tax, requiring all residents who own domestic dogs to register their pets with the municipality.
Under the new regulation, a one-time registration fee of ₹500 will be charged per dog, with an annual renewal fee of ₹100. Upon successful registration, each dog will receive a unique identification tag, which must be worn at all times.
Municipal officials state that the move aims to promote responsible pet ownership, ensure better monitoring of domestic animals, and help track lost or stray pets more effectively. It may also assist in managing the growing number of unregistered dogs in urban areas.
The council plans to roll out the registration process in phases and will be issuing official guidelines shortly. Pet owners are urged to comply with the new rule to avoid penalties in the future.
