MARGAO: In a recent meeting with hospital officials, citizens of Margao and Fatorda voiced their urgent concerns over the persistent shortfalls at the South Goa District Hospital. Led by youth leader Prabhav Naik, a delegation met

with Dr Rajendra Borkar, the hospital’s Medical Superintendent, to address several critical issues impacting patient care.

The group listed out the major problems, including a cumbersome patient registration process, a dire shortage of ambulances, and the absence of online payment options, all of which hinder access to vital services. Additionally, they pointed out the hospital’s insufficient bed capacity, and staff shortage.

“I feel ‘red tapism’ is the cause of all problems,” Naik remarked. He called on Health Minister Vishwajit Rane to take immediate action and alleviate these challenges for patients.

Naik revealed that the hospital has only two dedicated ambulances for cardiac and neonatal patients, while all other cases, including accidents, are serviced by 108 ambulances. “So far, no new ambulances have been

delivered to SGDH, despite promises from several officials, including Health Minister Rane, who pledged to provide two ambulances,” he said.

Furthermore, Naik noted that Dr Borkar assured him that persons with disabilities and pregnant women receive priority access in outpatient departments (OPDs). While the hospital has around 300 chairs in the lobby for senior citizens and other patients, due to panic, relatives and visitors sometimes create a rush, leading to overcrowding. “This issue will be addressed by the hospital administration,” he added.

Naik expressed dismay over the lack of online payment options, urging the Health Minister to expedite the implementation of a digital payment facility. “It is shocking that online or digital payments are not accepted at South Goa District Hospital. We urge Health Minister Rane to clear the file and initiate an online payment system immediately,” he demanded.

He also pointed out the hospital’s current capacity of only 350 beds, highlighting an urgent need for an additional 150 beds. “The government must not only increase the number of beds but also provide the necessary manpower to support this expansion,” Naik concluded.
