A troubling black spot has emerged near the field opposite Margao railway station due to accumulating garbage, causing inconvenience to the public and spoiling the surrounding environment. According to social worker Savio Coutinho, the primary reason behind this unpleasant situation is the ineffective door-to-door garbage collection system currently in place.
Savio Coutinho pointed out that waste collection from households is irregular and inconsistent. As a result, residents are left with no option but to dump their garbage at this spot, worsening the overall cleanliness of the area. The accumulation of waste not only creates an eyesore but also poses serious health and sanitation risks to commuters and local residents alike.
Despite Margao’s status as a key commercial and transit hub, garbage dumping continues to be a persistent problem. Local citizens sometimes resort to littering public spaces due to inadequate municipal enforcement and poor service delivery by contractors responsible for collecting door-to-door waste. This negligence has led to heaps of trash piling up at places like the field near the railway station, which affects the city’s image and hygiene standards.
Savio Coutinho has urged the Margao Municipality and relevant authorities to take swift and effective action. This includes improving the frequency and efficiency of garbage pickup from households, penalizing violators who dump waste illegally, and creating awareness among citizens on responsible waste disposal.
