Margao’s New Market continues to grapple with long-standing safety and infrastructure issues, with traders raising alarm over the lack of fire safety measures, parking chaos, and unchecked encroachments in and around the market area.
On December 26, 2023, a major fire incident nearly escalated into disaster. Quick action by traders and firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading, but the close call highlighted critical vulnerabilities in the market’s emergency preparedness. Following the incident, a joint inspection was carried out by the disaster management team, including officials from various government departments, the fire services, and market representatives.
During the inspection, it was recommended that an overhead water tank be constructed to ensure adequate pressure and supply to the market’s fire hydrant system. However, nearly five months later, no progress has been made, leaving over 450 shops in the New Market at serious risk in the event of another fire.
“If a fire breaks out again, the entire market could be reduced to ashes. With such a dense crowd, there could also be a stampede,” said a concerned shop owner. “We need a proper water tank to ensure strong water flow to the hydrants. The authorities must act now.”
In addition to fire safety concerns, traders and visitors have voiced frustration over worsening parking problems and rampant illegal encroachments on roads and footpaths around the market. These issues have not only led to traffic congestion but have also obstructed emergency access routes, further endangering public safety.
Traders are now calling on the government and local authorities to prioritize the market’s infrastructure and safety needs, urging swift implementation of promised upgrades. They emphasize that protecting one of Goa’s busiest commercial hubs is essential for the welfare of both business owners and the public.
