MARGAO: The Margao New Market Traders Association strongly objected on Friday to the Margao Municipal Council’s (MMC) decision to grant permission for a pandal outside the Old Bank of Baroda in the market area.

In a letter to the MMC, Gopal Naik, President of the Margao New Market Traders Association, stated that the pandal has been set up for the sale of lottery tickets associated with a club in Quepem.

He stated, “There are widespread doubts about the authenticity of this lottery operation. If this operation is indeed fraudulent, it will not only damage the reputation of the town but also tarnish the good name of the people of Margao.”

He further emphasised that the market area is already facing a severe parking shortage, and permitting this lottery stall to operate will exacerbate the situation, leading to traffic chaos and inconveniencing both traders and visitors.

Naik stated, “Let it be clearly understood - if this activity is allowed to proceed despite objections, the Margao New Market Traders Association will demand equal rights. We will formally seek permission to set up pandals in and around the market for three months, up to Christmas and New Year, for our business operations.” He called for immediate action to prevent the situation from escalating further.
