At 84, Tulshidas Naik of Chandrawado, Margao, continues to uphold a cherished Goan tradition, handcrafting Ganesh idols from clay. For decades, Naik has been creating between 650 and 700 eco-friendly idols each year, a skill he inherited from his forefathers.
Despite his age, Naik works tirelessly with the support of his family, who assist in every step of the process, from moulding and drying to painting and finishing. His idols, made entirely from natural clay, are increasingly sought after by locals who value environmentally friendly options for Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.
For Naik, the craft is more than a livelihood, it’s a way of safeguarding cultural heritage and passing it on to the next generation. As environmental awareness grows, his work stands as a testament to both tradition and sustainability.
