Massive Protests in Belagavi Against Mahadayi River Project Under ‘Our Water, Our Right’ Campaign

Thousands of protestors took to the streets of Belagavi on Tuesday under the banner of the 'Our Water, Our Right' movement, voicing strong opposition to the Karnataka government's Mahadayi River Basin project. The demonstrations drew participation from environmentalists, farmers, and civil society organizations, all united in their call to protect the ecologically sensitive Western Ghats.

The protest march began at Sardar's High School Ground and culminated at the Deputy Commissioner’s (DC) office, where demonstrators submitted a memorandum demanding an immediate halt to the Mahadayi river diversion plans. The groups argue that the project threatens biodiversity, disrupts natural water flows, and could have long-term environmental consequences for the region.

Protestors carried placards and chanted slogans emphasizing water rights, ecological preservation, and the importance of sustainable development. Activists alleged that the government has failed to conduct thorough environmental impact assessments and has ignored the voices of local communities.

Environmental groups also raised concerns about potential deforestation, loss of wildlife habitat, and irreversible damage to the Western Ghats—a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The protest marked one of the largest public mobilizations in the region in recent months, as the Mahadayi issue continues to stir political and environmental debates across Karnataka.
