MARGAO: The Bar Associations of Quepem and Sanguem have called for the resignation of Law Minister Alexio Sequeira after his public admission of failing to address alleged corruption in sub-registrar offices linked to land-grabbing cases. The associations also demanded a thorough investigation into the Minister’s allegations of collusion involving sub-registrars and advocates.

The controversy arose following Sequeira’s remarks during the inauguration of an advocate’s room at the South Goa Collectorate, where he alleged that staff at sub-registrar offices and some lawyers were engaged in corrupt activities.

Adv Sanjit Dessai, President of the Quepem and Sanguem Bar Associations, condemned the Minister’s statements, calling them defamatory to the legal fraternity. “The Bar Association is deeply pained by these baseless allegations. Such remarks tarnish the reputation of all legal professionals,” Dessai stated.

He demanded the formation of a commission, led by a retired High Court judge, to investigate corruption across all sub-registrar offices. Dessai also suggested annual assessments of the assets of sub-registrars and their families to check for disproportionate wealth.

Criticizing the Minister’s admission of failure, Dessai added, “It is shameful that the Law Minister candidly acknowledged his inability to stop corruption within the office of the sub-registrar, which functions under his administration.” The Bar Association has also written to the President of India, urging immediate intervention.

In response, Sequeira defended his claims, asserting that land-grabbing cases were impossible without the involvement of notaries. He referenced the Judge Jadhav Commission report, set up to investigate such cases, stating that legal action, including dismissal, would be taken against the implicated notaries.

“Land-grabbing activities cannot happen without notary participation,” Sequeira said, noting that the government is committed to addressing malpractice. “The dismissal of those found guilty will send a strong message and prevent future corruption.”

The Bar Association has urged swift government action to restore public confidence and accountability within the system.
