MARGAO: Frustrated by the government’s inaction despite their persistent pleas for measures to address the issue of stray bovines, Cuncolim residents have now demanded that the victims of accidents caused by stray cattle be compensated by the government.

Speaking to reporters, citizens have reported several accidents on the roads, including on the National Highway at Cuncolim, caused by stray cattle. Joseph Dias, a resident of Cuncolim, reported that stray cattle are frequently seen on the National Highway and expressed frustration over the lack of action from authorities or the government to prevent accidents caused by these animals.

“We have witnessed accidents on the roads due to stray cattle, resulting in fatalities and severe injuries,” Joseph Dias stated.

“Many victims are currently bedridden, and it is now the government’s responsibility to provide compensation for those affected,” he demanded. He further highlighted that the issue of stray cattle has remained unresolved for several years, despite persistent pleas to the government and relevant authorities for measures to prevent accidents.

“Who should be held responsible for accidents caused by stray cattle?” he questioned. “The Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s recent announcement to compensate victims at the Cutbona jetty is a positive step. He should also extend compensation to families of those who have died in accidents due to stray cattle,” said Paresh Naik, another resident of Cuncolim.

Cedric Dias, a resident of Fatorda, noted that stray cattle are frequently seen at the Margao KTC bus stand, and many motorists have been injured in accidents caused by these animals, especially in areas with poor road

illumination.
