MLA Premendra Shet Urges Calm Amid Commuter Outcry Over Ribandar–Chorao Ro-Ro Ferry Issues

Mayem MLA Premendra Shet has called for public patience and restraint amid mounting concerns surrounding the Ribandar–Chorao Ro-Ro ferry service, which is currently operating on a trial basis. Acknowledging the difficulties faced by commuters—including fare hikes, delays, and overcrowding—Shet assured that once the trial phase concludes, the issues will be reviewed and taken up with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant for appropriate resolution.

The Ro-Ro service, operated by Vijay Marine Services on a build-operate-transfer model, was launched to modernize Goa’s inland water transport system. However, since its launch, the route has witnessed heavy congestion, long queues, and dissatisfaction from daily commuters—especially during peak hours. In response, authorities have temporarily reinstated traditional ferries to ease the rush.

River Navigation Minister Subhash Phal Dessai confirmed that the Ro-Ro vessels are still undergoing trials and emphasized that full-scale operations will only begin once the second ferry is inducted. He also stated that if community representatives—such as local panchayats and the MLA—formally object to the Ro-Ro service, the government remains open to reverting to the older ferry system.

There have also been complaints about the handling of two-wheelers and inappropriate passenger behavior onboard. Additionally, viral videos showing unclean conditions have sparked criticism, which authorities have dismissed as attempts to "malign" the new service. They clarified that onboard emergency facilities like restrooms are not intended for regular use.

MLA Shet’s appeal for calm reflects an effort to give the service a fair evaluation during its trial phase. He reaffirmed his commitment to work with the Chief Minister and the River Navigation Department to address commuter concerns systematically, ensuring that long-term solutions are implemented in consultation with the public.
