VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council stood its ground and objected to issuance of an occupancy certificate issued to Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) by the Directorate of Municipal Administration.
During the ordinary meeting of the council, many councillors expressed their opposition and were of the opinion that the urban civic body must reject the occupancy certificate as the compound wall constructed by GSL was creating bottlenecks and needs to be razed.
Mormugao Chairperson Girish Borker said the GSL’s compound wall had been constructed 40 years ago was a contentious issue and most councillors demanded that it needs to be moved back.
Borker also alleged that the GSL had not provided job opportunities to locals. After much discussion, the matter was deferred.
However, Borker said that council had submitted several proposals to the GSL seeking community support under CSR contributions, such as providing a hearse van, but they were yet to take action.
As far as regularisation of 540 tenements in the Housing Board Colony at New Vaddem was concerned, the proposal was placed by the Goa Housing Board and accepted by the MMC. It was pointed out that while some tenants had outstanding rent, the matter was referred back to the GHB for resolution.
