VASCO: In a proactive effort to tackle the growing menace of plastic waste, the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) initiated a drive aimed at promoting eco-friendly alternatives in local markets, on Tuesday.
MMC chairperson Girish Borker led the initiative by distributing cloth and decomposable bags to vendors, emphasising the importance of reducing plastic usage.
During the operation, Borker personally collected plastic bags from market vendors and issued stern warnings against their continued use. He made it clear that failure to comply with these regulations would result in fines imposed by the council.
Borker said that though the council did not wish to levy fines on vendors for using plastic bags but it was required to reduce the use of plastic bags. He said that the students had also painted the black spots for the knowledge of motorists. He said that the cloth bags were prepared by the students and appealed to the vendors and citizens to use them or to use the decomposed bags daily.
The municipal inspectors seized about 500 plastic bags and gave them cloth bags and to make the Vasco town plastic-free.
