Mormugao port resumes operations after 60-hour cyclone alert shutdown

The Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) resumed operations on Saturday after a precautionary suspension lasting over 60 hours, following a cyclone formation alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) earlier in the week. The alert, released on May 21, warned of a possible cyclonic low-pressure system developing off the North Karnataka and Goa coast, prompting the MPA to temporarily halt all port activities to ensure safety.

In line with established safety protocols, the MPA instructed all ocean-going vessels to sail out to sea and adhere to standard operating procedures (SOPs) to safeguard navigation and port infrastructure. The port authority also announced that any unberthing and berthing charges incurred during the suspension period would be covered by the MPA itself.

With weather conditions stabilizing, vessels were recalled and cargo operations resumed without issues. However, the prolonged suspension caused disruption for stakeholders such as shipping agents, stevedores, and vessel operators, who raised concerns about delays affecting time-sensitive charters and the risk of financial losses. Despite these setbacks, stakeholders generally agreed that the MPA’s preventive action was necessary for ensuring safety and minimizing long-term risks.
