MPA Faces Backlash for Shutting Vasco Footbridge Before Saptah Festival; MLA Demands Reopening

The Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) has come under fire after it abruptly closed a key foot overbridge by welding shut the gates at both ends, sparking widespread criticism from public representatives and residents.

Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar slammed the MPA’s action, calling it “blatant dadagiri” and warning the authority against testing people’s patience. “This is high-handed behavior. The footbridge must be reopened immediately,” Salkar demanded.

The closure, which follows the recent installation of gates at the Baina ramps, has disrupted pedestrian access ahead of the Saptah festival, when thousands use the bridge to reach the city and the Vailankanni Chapel.

Mormugao Municipal Council Chairperson Girish Borker also criticized the MPA, saying it acted unilaterally without consulting local leaders or stakeholders. “The bridge is critical for festival crowds and daily commuters. Closing it without taking anyone into confidence is unacceptable,” Borker said.

Residents have echoed these concerns and urged the authorities to restore access without delay to avoid further inconvenience during the festive season.
