In a fresh breakthrough in the Mungul gang attack case, police have arrested two more accused — 20-year-oldJoyston Fernandesfrom Nerul and Sunil Bilawar — bringing the total number of arrests to 10.
Fernandes was traced and detained by a Porvorim Police Station team led by PSI Mandar Parab and PSI Pratik Tulaskar, with PC Akash Navelkar and PC Hemant Gaonkar. During the operation, officers also seized the car allegedly used in the assault. Both accused were later handed over to Fatorda police, who are investigating the case.
The arrests are linked to the violent ambush near Shagun Hotel in Mungul, Margao, along the Margao–Colva Road in the early hours of Tuesday. A gang of masked assailants intercepted the victims’ car — reportedly using a Baleno — before attacking them with swords, sticks, soda bottles and koytas, and firing two bullets before fleeing.
The victims, Rafiq Tashan (24) and Yuvkesh Singh Badaila (20), were injured in the attack. Tashan remains hospitalised, while Singh was discharged after treatment.
Police have confirmed the assault stems from an ongoing gang rivalry, with several accused having past criminal records, including attempted murder, assault and narcotics cases. Prime suspects Akshay and Rahul Talwar from Borda remain at large.
Forensic experts have collected crucial evidence from the crime scene, including shattered glass, an empty cartridge, a live round and blood samples from inside the vehicle. All exhibits have been sealed for detailed examination.
Authorities have stepped up day-and-night patrols in South Goa as the hunt for the remaining accused continues.
