Goa Police Unveil Protocols on World DNA Day to Improve Investigation and Prosecution of Sexual Assault Cases

In a significant step toward strengthening the investigation and prosecution of sexual assault cases, a new set of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the collection and handling of forensic evidence in rape cases was officially launched at the Goa Police Headquarters on the occasion of World DNA Day.

The initiative, spearheaded by renowned lawyer and former Additional Solicitor General of India, Pinky Anand, seeks to address long-standing gaps in the criminal justice system—particularly the inconsistent use of forensic science during investigations.

“These SOPs are expected to streamline the process of collecting, preserving, and analyzing critical forensic evidence, thereby enhancing the credibility and strength of prosecution in rape cases,” officials said.

The guidelines will serve as a uniform protocol for law enforcement officers, forensic experts, and medical personnel involved in the handling of sexual assault cases. They aim to minimize evidence contamination, ensure victim dignity, and promote a more scientific approach to justice delivery.

The launch marks a collaborative effort between legal experts, law enforcement, and forensic professionals to ensure that justice for survivors of sexual violence is not compromised due to procedural lapses.
