No Special Scheme Yet for Jasmine Farmers in Goa, Admits Agriculture Minister Ravi Naik

Agriculture Minister Ravi Naik has informed the Goa Legislative Assembly that there is currently no special scheme in place to protect jayo (jasmine) farmers or their land in the State.

In a written reply to a question raised by Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai, the Minister also stated that no legal protection is provided by the Agriculture Department for jasmine farmers.

However, Naik clarified that farmers cultivating jayo in Mardol typically do so under verbal agreements with private landowners. These farmers are eligible to receive Krishi Cards under the "care-taker" category, which qualifies them for assistance under the Shetkari Adhar Nidhi scheme in the event of crop damage.

Regarding the broader flower cultivation sector, Naik mentioned that the Goa Marketing Board imposes a 1% cess on imported notified commodities, including flowers. The government is encouraging local flower farming by offering several subsidies such as 75% financial assistance (up to Rs 75,000 per hectare) for the expansion of loose flower crops in open cultivation, 75% subsidy (up to Rs2 lakhs) for fencing and 75% to 90% subsidy on irrigation infrastructure installations.

To further support flower growers, the Directorate of Agriculture has launched a WhatsApp group initiative titled "E-Krishi Sampark" at the village level. This effort aligns with the theme "Vocal for Local", with a specific focus on promoting marigold cultivation.
