MARGAO: The District Consumer Protection Council of South Goa, during its recent meeting in Margao, addressed a wide range of consumer issues, with a focus on road safety, public infrastructure, and the sale of non-ISI helmets. The meeting, chaired by Additional Collector II Uday Prabhu Dessai, took place at the Matanhy Saldanha Administrative Complex.

Among the primary concerns discussed were the risks posed by the sale of non-ISI helmets, which are widely available on roadsides and in shops, endangering public safety. The council has brought this matter to the attention of the Bureau of Indian Standards, calling for swift action to curtail the distribution of these substandard products.

Road safety also dominated discussions, with members expressing concern over the lack of maintenance around electricity transformers, which poses a risk of accidents. The council urged authorities to address this issue and suggested turning off streetlights that remain lit during the day to conserve electricity.

Roland Martins, Coordinator of consumer ight group GOACAN, raised concerns about the inadequate maintenance services for electric bikes, which is affecting consumers across the State. He stressed the need for improved support for electric bike users and called for stronger fire safety regulations for buildings.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of improving public transport infrastructure. Council members agreed that a well-functioning public transport system could help reduce road accidents by decreasing the number of private vehicles on the roads.

Deputy Director of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Amit Sawant, along with senior officers from various government departments, attended the meeting, contributing to the discussions on how to enhance consumer safety and services in South Goa.
