The recovery of four bodies from separate locations across North Goa on Sunday prompted the district police to investigate these tragedies, which they registered as unnatural deaths.

Three bodies have been identified, while one remains unidentified which was found floating in the Mandovi River near Amona bridge.

In the first incident at Old Goa, the body of 62-year-old welder Tanaji Gaikwad from Kolhapur was found in a gutter near the police station. Fire and Emergency Services personnel assisted in retrieving the body. According to preliminary investigations, Gaikwad was a chronic alcoholic who frequently slept on the roadside, often near the edge of the gutter. Police have ruled out foul play and have registered a case of unnatural death.

The second case also reported in Old Goa, the body of 26-year-old Mirza Soren, a native of Odisha, who worked as a helper at a Biryani Corner, was found near his workplace.

Soren, also reportedly a chronic alcoholic, had been unwell for two days with jaundice and stomach pain. His body was sent to Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) for a post-mortem. The autopsy report cited Acute Hemorrhagic Pancreatitis as the cause of death. His body was handed over to his cousin, and a case of unnatural death was registered.

In the third incident, the body of Ajit Naik, 24, from Sambalpur, Odisha, was found floating in the Mandovi River. Police rushed to the site and shifted the body to GMC, Bambolim, for a post-mortem examination.

Police said Bibhishan Bagh, cousin brother of the deceased, informed them that Ajit had come along with a team of 25 persons for work. They all were working on a fishing boat owned by Kedar Naik from Betim at Malim Jetty. After joining work they took shelter in the boat. On August 22, at around 10 pm, they left for fishing with their fishing boat and when they reached in the middle of the river, Ajit fell down into the river as he was allegedly fully intoxicated and drowned. A missing person report was filed at Porvorim Police Station.

Finally, a fourth unidentified body was retrieved from the Mandovi River near the Amona Bridge. Personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services and Bicholim Police assisted in the retrieving the body and transporting it to GMC for further examination.

Investigations in all four cases, registered as unnatural deaths, are underway.
