Nuclear Families to Get Relief as P’yats Asked to Relax Housing Rules

Published on

The Goa government has rolled out a key reform allowing nuclear families residing under the same roof to obtain separate house numbers without requiring property partition. Effective from Monday, all panchayats have been instructed to process such bifurcation requests within 15 days, free of charge.

This initiative enables families to secure individual water and electricity connections, as each bifurcated unit will be assigned a house number with a suffix—such as A, B, or C.

To apply, residents must submit a simple application (Form ‘A’), a dimensioned sketch, proof of family relationship, and relevant tax receipts. Panchayat officials will conduct an on-site inspection to confirm that the portion is attached to the main structure and includes a separate kitchen. Written consent from all family members is mandatory. In cases of dispute, the Sarpanch or Panchayat Secretary will intervene.

The reform aims to minimize family conflicts, improve access to essential services, and enhance ease of living. While it allows for separate taxation and utility accounts, it does not grant legal property ownership. The system is expected to be extended to municipal areas in the near future, widening its impact across the state.
