MARGAO: Nuvem Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) members led by Zarina da Cunha, met Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira to discuss the long standing issue of sewage discharge in Sal river. “This problem has persisted for over two-and-a half –years causing environmental damage. The pollution has led to fish deaths and has affected farmers who depend on the river for irrigation,” said Da Cunha.

Da Cunha expressed frustration over the delayed resolution despite prior assurances of action within six months. She emphasized that the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) had shown little initiative in addressing the matter.

Following the meeting, Sequeira assured that measures would be taken to resolve the issue within a month. Da Cunha also raised concerns about frequent power supply interruptions affecting the local Nuvem residents, with Sequeira.

The High Court is presently hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) into the issue of River Sal getting polluted due to sewage discharge.
