MARGAO: Taking into consideration the concerns raised by the locals, the authorities on Monday inspected the road alongside the under-construction Western Bypass at Benaulim. This inspection aimed to address the issues highlighted and assess the current situation directly.
However, citizens brought to the attention of the officials that several other roads are in poor condition and need urgent repair. This additional concern highlights the broader issue
of infrastructure maintenance that needs to be addressed beyond the immediate repairs at the Mercado underpass.
MLA Venzy Viegas, along with officials from the department concerned, visited the site and initiated the process to repair the roads and drainage systems at the Mercado underpass. A few days ago, O Heraldo highlighted the issue where commuters and residents of Benaulim expressed frustration over the deteriorated condition of the road. The poor state of the road caused severe hardship to travellers.
Speaking to mediapersons, the MLA stated that hotmixing of the roads will not resolve the issue permanently and emphasised that while it may provide a temporary fix, a more comprehensive solution is needed to address the problems effectively.
“There is a need for a pavement quality concrete process to provide a long-term solution, rather than a temporary measure. Currently, considering the upcoming Chaturthi, work will commence soon, but commuters may have to undergo some hardship during this period,” he said.
The MLA said that the initial works will be completed before Chaturthi, which will require closing one side of the road to carry out the repairs.
“We have also proposed a drainage system to ensure the smooth flow of water,” he added.
