In a commendable display of urgency and compassion, the Old Goa Police successfully rescued a man from attempting suicide on April 27, 2025. The individual, a resident of Madir, Santa Cruz, was reportedly under severe emotional distress stemming from separation from his wife and daughter, and had been living alone.
The incident came to light when the Panjim Police Control Room (PCR) alerted Old Goa Police at 10:24 AM about a possible suicide attempt. Responding within just 12 minutes, officers reached the man’s residence and intervened in time to prevent a hanging attempt.
Following the rescue, the individual—referred to as 'X'—was brought to the police station where he was provided with immediate support. Recognizing the need for professional mental health care, authorities later admitted him to the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour (IPHB) in Bambolim. The admission was made under the guidance of the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Panjim, in accordance with the Mental Health Act.
The quick and sensitive response by the Old Goa Police not only saved a life but also ensured the individual received the medical attention he needed, highlighting the critical role law enforcement can play in mental health crisis situations.
