PANJIM: The Old Mandovi bridge which was closed for repairs was reopened for vehicular traffic on Friday while, the new bridge will now be closed for all types of traffic from March 2 to 10.
Announcing the closure of the new Mandovi bridge, the PWD, works division-(NH) executive engineer stated that the traffic having Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) up to 12.00 tons will be diverted on the Old Mandovi bridge and vehicles having GVW more than 12.00 tons will have to use the Atal Setu, so as to facilitate hindrance free and speedy completion of the said repair work.
The Old Mandovi bridge was closed for all types of vehicular traffic from February 15 to facilitate repair work including resurfacing with asphalt. The ongoing project, part of the NH (O) Annual Plan 2023-24, includes overlaying a new surface, implementing safety measures, and painting both the old and new Mandovi bridges.
Taking a cue that since the closure of Old Mandovi bridge had caused traffic congestion, the police have now advised parents of students answering the Goa Board class X exams to start early and, wherever possible, use the Atal Setu except for two-wheelers.
The traffic police have also urged all motorists travelling from Porvorim towards Ponda, Bambolim and South Goa, and vice versa, to use the Atal Setu to reduce congestion on the Old Mandovi bridge.
