In a rather surprising revelation, Goa is home to just one donkey, according to Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar’s written reply in the Assembly on Wednesday. This unique statistic stems from the 20th Livestock Census conducted in 2019.
Whether one wants to hear the bray of a donkey, spot the animal, or use it for educational purposes, there's only a single donkey available in the entire state, and it resides in North Goa.
The census unearthed more fascinating details about Goa’s livestock. Only two camels were recorded, both living in South Goa. The state also has eight sheep, ten elephants, and fifteen horses.
While wild elephants aren’t native to Goa, the ten listed are believed to be part of circus troupes, temples, or private collections. As for the horses, they serve ceremonial, recreational, or tourism-related roles across the state.
This data paints an unusual and quirky picture of Goa's livestock landscape , far from the numbers seen in India’s more agrarian regions.
