MARGAO: Overflowing sewage chambers have yet again raised a stink at Madel-Fatorda with residents and owners of business establishments stating that raw sewage was now literally at their doorsteps creating an unbearable stench and unhygienic conditions.
Despite numerous protests and appeals to local authorities, the problem persists, leaving many feeling they have no choice but to consider leaving their homes. The ongoing health hazards have prompted frustration and desperation among the residents, who feel ignored by the authorities responsible for resolving the issue.
On Monday, another incident of raw sewage overflow was reported in Madel, affecting open areas and agricultural fields just metres away from the National Highway. This persistent issue highlights the ongoing struggle residents face as they contend with the unpleasant odour and unhygienic conditions that have become a regular occurrence in their locality.
Authorities are struggling to pinpoint the source of the sewage overflow, leaving them in a difficult position. In response, residents expressed their frustration to O Heraldo, stating, “We are left with no other option.” Many feel it may be time to either abandon their homes or continue living with the health risks posed by the persistent sewage problem.
For the past eight years, residents of Madel have been vocal about the ongoing sewage overflow in their community, which has led to serious health hazards. Despite their consistent protests, officials from the relevant departments have only implemented temporary measures, failing to provide a lasting solution. Recently, residents staged another protest at the site, urging authorities to address the issue immediately, but the cycle of temporary fixes continues, leaving the community frustrated and desperate for a permanent resolution.
Speaking to O Heraldo about the recent incident, Milagres Fernandes expressed anger and stated that they are left with no other option but to live with the problem. He emphasised that the ongoing situation reflects clear negligence on the part of the sewerage department. Fernandes said, “The department concerned is least bothered to resolve the issue. Despite several pleas and written memorandums to the authorities, nothing has changed. All we’ve seen are temporary measures that fail to address the problem permanently.”
Cedric D’Costa expressed concern about the lengths residents might have to go to for attention, stating, “We fear even blocking the road could lead to FIRs against us.”
He added, “We don’t know what to do next. It’s frustrating that the authorities and the government aren’t taking this issue seriously, especially knowing it poses health hazards to our community.”
