Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited (IPSCDL), committed to sustainable and climate-friendly urban growth, has installed 11 medium-sized benches made entirely from recycled plastic at the new public space near National Theatre–Café Bhosle. This effort is part of the broader revitalisation of TB Cunha Road, transforming the heritage corridor into a lively, safe, and visually appealing area for residents and visitors alike.
In partnership with the OneEarth Foundation, the project highlights IPSCDL’s focus on circular economy principles by converting discarded plastic waste into durable, practical urban furniture. Each “Solid Plain Bench” measures 5 feet long, 3 feet deep, and 3 feet high, with a seating height of 17 inches. Weighing about 52 kilograms, each bench contains 41 kilograms of recycled plastic, mainly sourced from single-use items like plastic bags and packaging films, and is reinforced with a strong mild steel base for stability.
Beyond providing much-needed public seating, these benches symbolize the power of sustainable design and responsible consumption in shaping the cities of tomorrow. A senior IPSCDL official stated, “This initiative is a deliberate move toward building a sustainability model where waste is valued as a resource.”
Supporting India’s Swachh Bharat and Smart Cities Missions, the benches also aim to raise awareness about plastic waste and promote responsible usage. IPSCDL intends to expand this sustainable bench model throughout Panaji, further embedding eco-friendly practices into the urban environment.
