Panchayats and municipalities asked to prepare list of illiterates in run up to 100% literacy status

PANJIM: The village panchayats and municipal councils’ administration has been instructed to prepare and send list of illiterates in their jurisdiction to the government in order to declare the State as 100 per cent literate State by December 19 this year, under New India Literacy Mission.

In view of this, people who are still illiterate will be given basic literacy training by the government after identifying such people. The illiterate population in the State was reported to be two per cent.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who chaired the National Education Policy (NEP) steering committee meeting, took a thorough review of the implementation of the NEP 2020 in the State's school education system.

During the review of the New India Literacy Mission, the Chief Minister instructed the Director of Panchayats and the Director of Municipal Administration to direct Panchayat Secretaries and Chief Officers to provide a list of illiterates in their respective panchayat and municipal areas or to issue a certificate confirming that the ward, locality, village, or city is literate.

Secretary (Education) Prasad Lolayekar provided a detailed briefing on the current status of NEP 2020 implementation in the State, highlighting the following key points: The State Curriculum Framework for the Foundational and Secondary Stages has been officially notified. The curriculum for Foundational Stage I and Foundational Stage II has been developed and distributed to all schools, it was informed.

Art and Vocational Education teachers have been allocated to all schools to introduce art education as part of the NEP 2020 implementation. Teachers instructing Class IX have received training in learning outcomes, assessment rubrics, and evaluation patterns.

A group of 80 Mathematics and Science teachers has undergone training at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. The State Curriculum Development Committees for the Preparatory and Middle Stages are in the process of developing curricula for NEP implementation at their respective stages, starting from the next academic year. Also Taluka-level visits will be conducted to engage with schools individually and address any challenges they may face.

The PARAKH Rashtriya Sarvekshan 2024 (formerly known as NAS) is scheduled for November 19, 2024. To prepare for this, it was decided to conduct pre-tests for students in Classes III, VI, and IX across all schools in Goa on September 4. Schools will receive daily questions, in addition to the existing weekly questions, through Vidya Samiksha Kedra (SCERT) to help students prepare for the Rashtriya Sarvekshan.

The ULLAS (Understanding of Lifelong Learning for All in Society) Scheme was also reviewed.

, with the Chief Minister instructing the Director of Social Welfare to consider using panchayat halls as UMID centres in areas where a centre has not yet been identified.
