MARGAO: In a bid to enhance household security, police stations across South Goa have commenced a domestic servant verification drive, registering a total of 2,183 forms by September 2024. This initiative aims to ensure that households hire domestic help without criminal backgrounds, thereby safeguarding family members and property.
According to official data, Ponda Police Station has registered the highest number of verification forms, with 557 entries. Vasco Police follows closely with 520 forms, while Colva Police has registered 368. Fatorda Police has submitted 212 forms, with Margao Police adding 84. Other stations include Maina-Curtorim (66), Cuncolim (33), Quepem (29), Curchorem (74), Sanguem (93), Verna (20), Mormugao (25), Collem (59), and Mardol (40). Canacona Police registered the lowest, with just 3 forms submitted.
A senior police officer emphasised the importance of this drive, stating, "Registering domestic servants ensures the safety of children and family members. Background checks help identify workers with a history of theft or other criminal activities, preventing potential thefts and protecting personal belongings and assets."
A retired assistant sub-inspector, who formerly handled servant registration, noted the significance of these checks. He explained that domestic workers often have access to sensitive information about a family, and the police verification process helps establish trustworthiness and reliability.
The officer also highlighted the consequences of not registering domestic servants. "If a maid escapes with cash or valuables and is not registered with the police, it becomes difficult for law enforcement to immediately investigate the case, reducing the chances of apprehending the culprit and recovering stolen property," he said.
This verification process, officials assert, is essential to maintaining household safety and peace of mind.
