PONDA: In response to increasing crime rates, residents of Ponda taluka are calling for the installation of CCTV surveillance in key areas, including temples and other religious sites. With 19 panchayats spread across the taluka, locals believe that additional measures are necessary to enhance safety, as police cannot be present everywhere at all times.
The Ponda police have recently engaged with the community through several meetings and visits to various panchayats, aiming to raise awareness about home security. Despite the arrest of a gang of thieves, residents remain anxious as burglaries continue. A recent incident involved an elderly woman who was robbed of her gold ornaments by individuals posing as police officers in broad daylight at Dhavalim.
In light of these thefts, both the Mardol and Ponda police have initiated a tenant verification drive, which has been welcomed by the community. Former Kavalem sarpanch Rajesh Kavalekar emphasised the importance of vigilance among villagers, stating that local panchayat bodies and temples capable of affording CCTV should install cameras on their premises, particularly facing the road. This would help identify vehicles and individuals involved in criminal activities at all hours.
A police official noted that the lack of a proper CCTV system often hampers investigations, making it difficult to trace criminals after a crime has occurred. He advocated for high-quality CCTV installations in prime locations such as temples and markets, suggesting that local Panchayats take the initiative to support police efforts in crime detection.
Naresh Naik, a resident of Ponda, echoed these sentiments, stating that while CCTV may not prevent crime, it can assist law enforcement in gathering evidence and tracking down offenders.
Meanwhile, the Mardol Police Station has commenced its tenant verification drive within its jurisdiction, with staff deployed across all Panchayat areas. This initiative will run from October 1-10, aiming to bolster community safety and security.
