PONDA: Ponda, often referred to as the ‘Temple City’, is home to over 300 temples, many of which are also popular tourist destinations. This year, Fonekars have embraced the vibrant spirit of Navaratri, the nine-day festival dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga in her nine forms. The festival, which began on October 3 and will conclude on October 12 with Dussehra, has drawn throngs of devotees to the area’s famous temples.
Navaratri, celebrated with devotion and revelry, begins with the ritual of Gatasthapana on the first day. Over the course of nine days, idols of the Goddess are placed on elaborately decorated swings (makhar) adorned with flowers. Devotees gently sway the idols to the soothing sounds of traditional temple music.
Throughout the festival, the temples are buzzing with activity. Devotees gather to witness the aarti and participate in the gentle swing of the deity’s idol. A series of cultural programmes, including bhajans and kirtans, have been organised in various temples, adding to the festive atmosphere. Temples are decked out with flowers and colourful lights, offering a divine spectacle to all who visit.
Navaratri also boosts local businesses, as the demand for flowers, new clothes, and festival-related items surges, benefiting local vendors and markets.
