Porvorim to Colva: Goa’s Heritage Tourism Gets a Major Boost

Published on

Goa's tourism landscape is poised for a massive transformation as Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte unveils a series of ambitious projects aimed at expanding the state's appeal beyond its iconic beaches. At the heart of this vision is the ₹120.97 crore Town Square project in Porvorim — a heritage-themed public space spanning 11,000 square meters. Designed to serve as a cultural and community hub, the Town Square will include features such as a market court, heritage court, clock tower, and performance zones, offering a vibrant platform for local artisans and cultural entrepreneurs. The project is expected to be completed by March 2026, with ₹90.74 crore funded by the Central Government and the remainder by the state.

Complementing this initiative are the beautification of Porvorim Creek and the development of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum at Farmagudi. These projects form part of a larger push to promote cultural and heritage tourism in Goa.

Under the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme, a rural tourism circuit from Porvorim to Harvalem will highlight natural and cultural sites such as Torda Creek and Pomburpa spring, while Colva Beach is slated for a major facelift to enhance its appeal.

Together, these projects — supported by nearly ₹400 crore in central funding — are designed to attract high-value, year-round tourism, promote monsoon travel, and encourage deeper exploration of Goa’s rich hinterlands, heritage, and local culture.
