PONDA: Bright days are in store for the Vanarmare tribe residing in Nirankal Bethora as the State Government has initiated plans to provide electricity connections to 20 families living in makeshift huts for the first time. This move is seen as a beacon of hope for the community, which has long struggled for basic facilities and improved living conditions.

The Vanarmare tribe, known for their nomadic lifestyle and originally hailing from Maharashtra, has faced numerous challenges over the years. Their plight came to public attention in 2016 when their huts were demolished, prompting support from NGOs and local Goans. Since then, efforts have been made to provide essential needs, including water supply and rations, following directives from the Human Rights Commission.

The Electricity Department has now floated a tender to install power supply in the huts. Due to the lack of ownership documents, a temporary wall made of bricks will be constructed to house a power supply meter box and operational unit. The connection will feature underground cables for safety, with plans to provide two light bulbs and a socket for mobile charging. This among things will help children study at night. The estimated cost of the project to cost around Rs 13 lakh.

Community members have expressed their desire for pucca houses, envisioning a brighter future for their children. Currently, there are around 50 Vanarmare children, with 23 in primary school, 13 in high school, and 9 in nursery. The absence of reliable lighting has previously hindered their studies, forcing them to rely on kerosene lamps.

Thanks to the combined efforts of NGOs and the government, 35 tribal members have recently obtained voter and ration cards, which they were previously denied. Health camps are also being organised to promote hygiene within the community.
